New College Pontefract’s production of ‘The Addams Family’ took place from 7-9th March. The college’s 120 seat John Godber Theatre hosted its seventh annual theatre production with students performing two matinee and three evening performances.

The musical comedy tells the story of Wednesday Addams falling in love with an ordinary young man, forcing her father to keep the terrible secret from her mother, the macabre Morticia. All goes well, until one fateful night when the families are brought together at a dinner party.

Thomas Kilroy took the lead in breath-taking fashion as Gomez, Wednesday’s father. The main characters were supported by a fabulous group of performers, dancers and even a 5ft moon.

The cast were supported by a dedicated technical team of staff and students, with student Joe Pilling designing the lighting set. The musicians worked tirelessly on a professional standard score and provided outstanding accompaniment to underscore the drama.

Students from across all subjects took part in the show, ensuring it was a cross-curricular production.

Michelle Colville, head of Performing Arts at the college said, “The Addams Family will be a treasured memory of many students’ time at New College. Performing arts offer so much to students in terms of building confidence, encouraging teamwork and giving them opportunities that they have not had before. The students worked really hard, rehearsing in their free time and on Sundays to ensure a professional standard performance.”

Richard Fletcher, Principal of New College, said “An absolutely fantastic performance enjoyed by all!  The actors and actresses, the band, the technicians and the teachers all contributed to an epic show.  It is really good to see students enjoying themselves and showcasing their talents outside of the classroom, contributing to an outstanding student experience.”

Students from New College Pontefract’s Foundation Diploma in Art & Design course held their annual exhibition, ‘Paris in the Park’ last week. The students were allocated space in Pontefract park to install their work, with all staff and students from the college invited outside to discover all of the pieces. This weather was especially kind this year with the event taking place in glorious sunshine.

Alan Chadderton, who is one of the Foundation Diploma teachers, said, “The exhibition is an annual one originating from a week’s long residential to London and Paris. Students focus upon their chosen pathway and produce work for both their university interviews and the installation in the park. Ideas are generated from observations made during the residential, including gallery visits, personal and shared experiences and exposure to cultural differences encountered in two major capital cities.

Top five in national performance league table for the past 5 years

New College Pontefract is celebrating confirmation of an impressive five-year track record this month. The release of data by the DfE’s Education and Skills Funding Agency means that New College Pontefract is, for the fifth year in a row, in the top five of all sixth form colleges in the country for achievement.

Achievement rates are calculated by multiplying pass rates with retention rates, i.e. the number of students who stay on the course. This provides a realistic picture of how strong a provider is. The vast majority of students attending colleges at the top of the table have completed the qualifications they started.

“It is another piece of evidence that New College Pontefract continues to be one of the top performing colleges in the country,” said Richard Fletcher, Principal. “Managing to maintain a top-five position for five years shows that the college’s systems, staff and strategies are helping local young people access better university places, better training and better jobs. We are delighted to be able to make such a positive impact every year.”

New College Pontefract student, Thomas Goodall, who took up cycling to help with his epilepsy symptoms, has now found sponsorship with homebuilder, Taylor Wimpey.

The firm approached the college after reading Tom’s story, and have donated him the sum of £500 towards a new bike and cycling apparel.

On receiving the money Tom said, “It’s so good to see big businesses helping people within the local community! Cycling means so much to me. Not only do I associate riding my bike with keeping my epilepsy under control, I’ve always found that exercise is the best way to channel any negativity or frustration. Cycling has had a really positive impact on my life and more recently, it’s even allowed me to help others by raising money and donating to charity.”

Managing Director of Taylor Wimpey Yorkshire, James Poynor, was quoted as saying, “As a homebuilder, we always aim to help the communities in which we build flourish and Tom is a shining example of the kind of person we want to support. We wish him all the success with cycling as both his hobby and treatment.”

Gareth Dodson, Marketing Manager of the New Collaborative Learning Trust, which operates New College Pontefract, commented: “It’s fantastic to see a large company reaching out to local young people. Tom has found a hobby that has had a transformative effect on his life and this donation will allow him to pursue his love for cycling further.”

Student shortlisted for writing award

Current New College Pontefract student, Mia Lofthouse, 17 from Castleford, has been shortlisted for the Wicked Young Writers award. The award, now in its 8th year, is a chance for young people aged between 5 and 25, to get creative and write about anything they choose. There were over 4500 entries, competing in 6 age categories. The finalists will be attending a ceremony in London where the winner will be selected by ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ author, Cressida Cowell, and their story read aloud on stage by the cast of Wicked, the Musical.

Speaking about the competition, Mia said, “I have told and written stories since being very small. For the last four years I have been working on a novel, the first of a trilogy. I stumbled open the writing competition on the Internet. I’d never really entered one before but I liked the fact that with the Wicked Young Writers award I had the opportunity to write anything, on any subject, as long as it fell under 750 words. I rarely give myself the opportunity to write about things unrelated to my book, as, I have said, the sheer size of it and my passion for it takes up a lot of my time. I never imagined I would get this far and it has given me a real boost with my writing. There will only be one winner per category who will be revealed on the 21st June at the ceremony, but I think just being a finalist and attending the ceremony and meeting Cressida will be a brilliant experience. I urge any young writers to have a go at things like this and get their voice heard, for fiction has and always will be an essential part of life for many people.

Lucy Reynolds, Learning Leader for English at the college said, “Mia has always been an enthusiastic English student and obviously has a real flair for writing. Because I knew she wanted to go on to study creative writing, I have encouraged her to enter competitions and join writing groups, and her talent has resulted in her becoming a finalist in this fantastic competition. I am so proud of her and really do feel like she has a wonderful writing career ahead of her.”

New College Pontefract accredited by ground-breaking dual career scheme

$

New College Pontefract is leading the way with supporting talented athletes in education in England, having been accredited by an innovative Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS) initiative.

The Sport England-funded Scheme believes that every young person on a talent pathway should have the opportunity to gain qualifications alongside their sporting pursuits and have the chance to follow other interests and personal development.

And by formally recognising an institution’s commitment to supporting student-athletes, the TASS Dual Career Accreditation Scheme aims to allow athletes to reach their potential in education alongside achieving success in their sport.

Referenced within the Education section of Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson’s Duty of Care in Sport Review published last year, accreditation shows that a college or university has the ability to support students following a dual career route. Backing the scheme, she said:

“Having looked in detail at the talent pathway and the support available for talented young athletes in the Duty of Care review I carried out, I’m really pleased to learn that TASS are now accrediting education institutions.

“I believe we have to a duty to help young people to achieve their potential, whilst prioritising their welfare, wellbeing and education. For the vast majority of athletes, skills and formal qualifications are needed to help them find alternative careers, either alongside their sporting activities or once their sporting days are over.

“For me the TASS Dual Career Accreditation Scheme is a vitally important measure to ensuring all athletes have the chance to pursue an education and enjoy a more well-rounded approach to life.”

As a Dual Career Accredited Centre, New College Pontefract will be an important extension of the network of universities that already partner with TASS, delivering core support services to more than 400 student-athletes each year.

These support services include physiotherapy, nutrition, lifestyle support, psychology strength and conditioning and a private medical scheme.

While some of the existing services delivered focus solely on developing the young person’s sporting performance, a dual career support structure and academic flexibility policies will be central to the help available to athletes based at an Accredited Centre.

A designated Dual Career Coordinator will complete the Talented Athlete Support in Transitions and Education (TASTE) course, equipping them with the skills to practice a dual career approach.

Additionally, all Dual Career Accredited Centres will be equipped with a toolkit of resources to help provide practical dual career support and bring together all parties who work with the athlete.

For student-athletes, the academic flexibility policies may mean they have the opportunity to access online notes or resources, have a choice of assignments, are able to arrange catch up sessions with lecturers, or even reschedule deadlines or exam dates in exceptional circumstances.

Meanwhile for New College Pontefract, the recognition of becoming a TASS Dual Career Accredited Centre is expected to be beneficial by attracting a greater number of talented athletes and building connections with other local sporting institutions.

TASS National Director, Guy Taylor, said: “We’re delighted to be awarding TASS Dual Career Accreditation to the first colleges and universities to complete the commitment process.

“Dual career support is at the forefront of what TASS does and that’s why the Accreditation Scheme is so important for us in recognising those institutions who place precedence on their athletes’ education too.

“We hope that the academic flexibility policies put into place for the accreditation will begin to develop an effective and lasting dual career structure within each institution.

“Congratulations to the Accredited institutions and we look forward to working alongside many more outstanding colleges and universities in the near future.”

Sport England’s Director of Sport, Phil Smith added:

“Our future sporting champions shouldn’t have to choose between getting an education and excelling at their sport, but they are at risk of dropping out of one of them if they don’t get the right support.

“Since 2004, over 6,000 athletes have been supported via the Sport England-funded TASS scheme, 98 of whom went on to compete at the Rio Olympics.

“We’re excited we can now offer education institutions the opportunity to become a TASS Dual Career Accredited Centre, so they can access training and resources to help provide practical dual career support for athletes.”

New College student receives gold DofE award from royal family at Buckingham Palace

New College Pontefract student, Amy Middler, has received her DofE gold award in a ceremony held at Buckingham Palace in London. The Gold Duke of Edinburgh award (DofE) requires a range of skills, which are broken down into 5 main sections, Physical, Skills and Volunteering which take roughly a year to complete depending on previous awards achieved, 2×4 day hiking expeditions and a residential experience.

Amy said, “The Gold Duke of Edinburgh award (DofE) has been one of my best achievements. It has taught me that in order to achieve a goal, hard work and dedication is required. Despite it being extremely challenging at times the feeling of relief when reaching the campsite or the bus on the last day made me realise the success it brings. It brought great pride to me when I went to Buckingham Palace to be awarded this by the royal family, this and the expeditions is something I will never forget and I would really recommend the programme!

Linda Ripley, Amy’s Progress Tutor at the college, said, “Amy has been a student at New College Pontefract for the last 2 years, and prior to that she was at the Kings’ School. Amy is a hardworking and committed student with an excellent attendance record and out of college she takes part in a variety of activities, one being The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. After college Amy has been offered a place at Leeds University to study a degree in Geography/Geology, I am sure with her passion for subjects and her mature approach to her studies that she will do extremely well.

Students, staff and governors are proud and delighted with this year’s exam results, which have exceeded the outstanding performance achieved of previous years. Our A-Level students of 2018 achieved an overall pass rate of 100%, an A*-B rate of 55.2% and an A*-C rate of 82%, which conforms the college’s reputation as a consistently high performing sixth form provider both locally and nationally. This is matched by the equally strong performance of our Level 3 BTEC students who achieved an overall pass rate of 100% with 91% achieving a Distinction or Distinction* grade.

New College Pontefract Principal, Richard Fletcher said, “Once again I am extremely proud of our students’ achievements this year, particularly given the national changes to A-Level qualifications in recent years. These results not only represent the culmination of two years’ dedicated study, they also enable our talented students to progress to the best universities and on to fulfilling careers.

New College Pontefract is part of the New Collaborative Learning Trust (NCLT), and the Trust’s CEO, Pauline Hagen OBE said, “Well done to students and to their first class teachers who have supported them in their learning journey.
